Research focused on practice forms an area of study relevant to know the theory behind teaching and its improvement, a fact of interest in school mathematics. The study shows the path followed in the reconstruction, interpretation and promotion of changes in instructional practices of one teacher from the critical educational approach, where we explored his theory in use in the teaching of mathematics. The process included the reconstruction of the theory in use and a period of reflection to promote change. The results indicate that the teacher performed a classical education,reflecting on this fact led him to seek conceptual frameworks to support his future teaching practices. Paths emerged from the study can help to improve research in teaching of mathematics, and implications for designing curricular programs of teacher training
