In the article107 of the Bolivarian Constitution of Venezuela (1999), the Environmental Education is a mandatory course in the different levels and modalities of educational systems. According to UNESCO (1977), people should be educated through the acquisition of knowledge; abilities and values aimed at favoring both the environment,and the neat of develop practical activities in local environments. The purpose was to describe Professor Durant’s active participation in the initial stages of professional training of pre-service teachers in the area of environmental education at the University of The Andes in Venezuela. The study used a qualitativeinterpretative paradigm. Procedures included the design, application, transcription and categorization of the interviews and data analysis. The results derived from the study show that: a) In 1970, Professor Durant initiated the formation in the area of environmental education with students of the option of Biology in the Faculty of Humanities and Education at ULA. Through the teaching of courses on environmental ecology and b) The research group on Animal Ecology, of which Durant is a member, which promoted environmental formation within the Faculty.
