CHIRINO BETANCOURT, Yusmeny J; BENZO, Zully  y  FERNANDEZ, Raiza. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Atmospheric Particles Sedimented: A comparative study in different areas in the city of Caracas-Venezuela. Revista de Investigación [online]. 2015, vol.39, n.84, pp.157-180. ISSN 1010-2914.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic compounds in atmospheric particles with high carcinogenic and mutagenic power. The objective of the research was to determine the amount of PAHs adsorbed to atmospheric particles sedimented at three locations in the city of Caracas, two urban and sub -urban, during the rainy and dry seasons. The extraction method used was ultrasound and chemical analysis High Performance Liquid Chromatography with Photodiode Arrays and Fluorescence detectors (HPLC/UV-FL). In urban areas were found: anthracene, fluoranthene, pyrene, chrysene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, benzo[a] pyrene, benzo[ghi]perylene and indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene being possible indicators of burning fossil fuel (gasoline and diesel). During the dry season is additionally identified phenanthrene possible indicator for biomass burning. In the sub-urban PAHs concentrations were below the detection limit. In general, low concentrations of PAHs with respect to international reports.

Palabras clave : Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons; sedimented atmospheric particles; Caracas.
