The referential structure and the citation practices in doctoral theses are elements to be taken into account to ensure good quality in research. Little is known about these aspects in the field of education and for this reason an analysis of the citation practices of 71 theses written from 1996 to 2013 in a doctoral program is presented. A total of 8899 references were found for an average of 125± 49 per thesis. A comparison with papers written in other countries indicates that both the English language and the primary references are underrepresented in the information sources. Multi- reference practice compared to individual citation is scarce. These results indicate that paying greater attention to the process of literature revision for the investigation to be performed is essential
