The paper explores the approach to issues related to sustainable tourism made by teachers of La Libertad Educational Unit, Libertad Parish, Province of Carchi, Ecuador, in order to propose an instructional design that addresses the detected needs. The method was structured in three phases: (1) an analysis of the curricula, in order to diagnose the contents of the topics of tourism, sustainable development and local natural heritage present in these official documents; (2) a diagnosis of the educational approach of tourism, sustainable development and local heritage themes made by the teachers of the U.E. La Libertad; (3) elaboration of an instructional design that allows addressing these issues in the learning community of the Educational Unit. The proposed instructional design is aimed at the development of competencies for the incorporation of themes related to sustainable tourism in its pedagogical praxis.
