SANCHEZ GARCIA, Ysbelia et al. Characterization of a variety of Stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni) Bertoni (Asteraceae - Eupatorieae) from vegetative and reproductive morphology and morphoanatomy leaf. Revista de Investigación [online]. 2017, vol.41, n.92, pp.95-114. ISSN 1010-2914.
Stevia rebaudiana, originating in Southeastern Paraguay and Northwest of Misiones, presents in its leaves steviosides and rebaudiosides with high sweetening power and pharmacological properties. In Venezuela it is of recent culture and its accessions are unknown. It was characterized a cultivar, maintained in family farms in Laguneta de la Montaña, from foliar morphoanatomy and vegetative-reproductive morphology. They are described according to the conventional taxonomic methodology. The anatomical study was performed in leaf cross sections and in paradermics clarified with sodium hypochlorite. Individuals have erect, cylindrical, pubescent stems. Leaves are opposite decocted, trinervate, winged petiole. Inflorescences, terminal and axillary; inflorescences with tiny white flowers; Involved with five unequal bracts. Fruit is achene. Amphistomatic leaves, stomatal index X = 23.95, palisade parenchyma index X = 2.5. The studied Stevia rebaudiana cultivar presents morphological and anatomical characteristics similar to the cultivars genetically close to the wild variety of Paraguay.
