The guidelines for authors are a key text type in the research journals of any discipline. For this reason, an empirical study using these texts analyzed a group of Guidelines for Authors from nine indexed education research journals from Colombia. The objectives were to find out what type of research article is promoted or preferred in these journals. By means of a qualitative emergent strategy the rhetorical move analysis of texts showed that although several types of articles are promoted in the guidelines no preference is explicitated in the guidelines. Details about the types of articles sought after are provided in most journals but a possible preference for the scientific research article proper is perceived as indirect. A recommendation would be to provide more information and more details in the guidelines as to the article types sought after or preferred.
