Knowledge structure on evolution theory constructed by high school students is studied, according to epistemological level (description, explanation) and cognitive level (analytical reasoning, hipothetical-explanatory reasoning). An instructional method directed to foster abstract knowledge construction was applied in one of two groups studied, and the whole classroom interactive process was videotaped in both groups. Results of this experience show both groups substantially improved on each level of the epistemological dimension regarding analytical reasoning, but the improvement was significantly larger in the group in which the instructional method was applied.
