Knowing the extremely importance of the comprehension to the college, the aim of this paper was to verify, among freshman students, the level of reading comprehension according to the course and sex. 134 freshmen college of the first year, studying humanities, exacting and biological sciences, of two private universities from two different states, were submitted. For the Cloze test a text from a magazine was selected and a rational deletion criterion was used to structure it (was deleted every 5th word). The punctuation could vary from 0 to 40. The mean score was 18,49 (s.d. = 4,12), demonstrating that freshmen college do not have competence in reading skills. There were not significant statistics differences on the comprehension into the comparison among the courses and sex. Results was in according with other researches that demonstrated that great part of freshmen college do not have competence in reading skills. The Cloze technique was useful to detect at what level the readers were, bringing elements for either casual intervention programs or faculty members practices who want to help their freshmen college to develop linguistic skills.
