The article deals with a curricular view that includes the competencies as a formative goal. The different dimensions of this view are to do with: a) the need to favour the development of competencies, understood as complex abilities or skills - in context - that do not suppress or overshadow the basic purposes of university teaching - critical and academic perspective, b) the tensions present in the discourse and in the teaching practice, product of the processes of change in the present engineering teaching scene, c) a vision of technology that sees it as a set of particular knowledge, d) a wider meaning of curriculum that includes practical matters of real-life teaching and learning, as well as activities connected with curricular management, e) underline the inevitable relationship between curriculum and institution to understand the real possibilities and obstacles of the changes and, f) the need to analyse the characteristics of teachers and students due to the fact that they affect the possibilities, restrictions and projections of the curricular proposals.
