The purpose of this study is to describe the marker “pues”  uses and functions in central position. This research is based upon Martín Zorraquino y Portolés (1999), Poblete (1998), Llorente (1996), Porroche Ballesteros (2002), Casado Velarde (2000), Gili Gaya (1983) y Alcina y Blecua (1975), and other authors contributions. The sample was taken from the Sociolinguistic Corpus of Merida (1995) through a search in the Spanish Referential Corpus (CREA) data base. The search generated 21 paragraphs, all of them from the same interviewee in one document, from which we took out the cases in which “pues” was in central position. This study analysis was made in two levels: sentence level and the textual-discursive level. The results of this study showed that the discursive function of the marker “pues” appears in 75% of the cases, the rest (25%) was textual. According to the use of this marker, the majority of the cases revealed that the “pues” is primarily used as message reformulated to help the interlocutor comprehension and to reflect a cause-effect relation.
