The aim of this study was to analyze the structural characteristics and the quality of the texts of competent and incompetent writers, as well as to analyze the grammatical and rhetorical processes carried out by both groups in order to determine the psychological and motivational factors involved in the drafting of a text. The theory was based on textual linguistics (van Dijk, 1983), textuality rules and the theory that supports the basic principles of roman rhetoric. The study was carried out from a qualitative approach and from a theoretical research perspective. The design of the theories on which it was based was used to bring forth a conceptual explanation of the personal, cognitive, linguistic and rhetorical factors that influence the production of academic texts. The results showed that the aftermath of the punitive teaching of writing, as well as the idea that speaking and writing are very different processes is that many individuals have a great fear of writing and are not resorting to their communication skills.
