FERNANDEZ DE MORGADO, Nelly. Retención y persistencia estudiantil en instituciones de educación superior: una aproximación interdisciplinaria al conceptoSTUDENT RETENTION AND PERSISTENCE IN HIGHER EDUCATION: AN INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO THE CONCEPT. Paradígma [online]. 2012, vol.33, n.2, pp.063-088. ISSN 1011-2251.
The present paper is a theoretical article whose purpose is to present an alternative framework to conceptualize the phenomenon of retention-persistence in higher education. In Latin-America, this matter has been traditionally studied under the term of drop out or attrition, which suggest that the individual is the prime responsible. As of the nineties a shift in terminology and approaches to the problem were observed in other orbs. The need to have the academy endeavored in the generation of fresh visions to the study of this issue has been felt. The objective of this paper was to produce an interdisciplinary theoretical approach that would contribute to satisfy this need. Three disciplines were chosen, Pedagogy, Sociology and Economy, and three outstanding authors from each, Vincent Tinto, Pierre Bourdieu y Jean-Claude Passeron, y Amartya Kumar Sen. First, the theoretical orientations of each author is presented. Then, the model that derives from each theory is specified. Finally, a definition of retention-persistence that merges the three approaches is given. As a result, retention-persistence is defined as a combination of functionings of the agents and institutions that belong to higher education. From this perspective, the beings that value this combination of functionings need to count with the real opportunity to have access to and keep the commodities and habitus needed to attain academic and social integration, otherwise, achievement of retention-persistence would be highly compromised.
