Knowledge production and dissemination are part of the key functions of universities. Thus, studying aspects of refereed journals edited by such institutions of higher learning can cast light on various important issues and problems, including those that can hinder the regular editing of publications. This analytic study using evaluation methods was based on written academic genres. Its main objective was to find out possible causes of the crisis and temporary demise of an important education journal from Venezuela during part of the 1980s. Both journal editorials and School Council actae were analyzed. Results show that the main reasons for the journals crisis and temporary demise are attributed to an amalgam of factors grouped under the denomination of other factors. The study reveals beliefs and ideologies that originate and develop within the discourse community. It is concluded that issues and problems related to university journal editing are part of the organizational culture and have to do with the particular society to which our centers of higher learning belong.
