This paper presents a brief history of books, characterizing them as expressions of hybrid and unfinished phenomenon, composed by inseparable elements. Based on the principles of complex systems published on Mapa inacabado da Complexidade (ALMEIDA, 2013) and Ciência com Consciência (MORIN, 2013), the study describes what are the complexity sciences through eleven principles woven to characterize and identify, on these principles, some elements that define books as a dedicated informational support, used throughout human knowledge's history and recorded as what may be labeled as of complex order.
