CHELA-FLORES, Godsuno y D'AQUINO, Giovanna. Reorientation of the spanish dialectal division: Data from venezuelan and iberian varieties. Revista de Ciencias Humanas y Sociales [online]. 2003, vol.19, n.42, pp.95-111. ISSN 1012-1587.
The traditional dichotomic approach to Spanish dialectology is questioned: the dialectal division of American Spanish -"conservative" vs. "radical" dialects- has been based on the divergence between orthography and pronunciation of postnuclear consonants; this classification is linked to the geography of the subcontinent. The inadequacy of such a division is demonstrated with data of prenuclear and postnuclear processes in Venezuelan Spanish varieties. The viability of extending this dialectal division to morphology and syntax is explored. It is concluded that it is necessary to increase the number of dialectal types and to take universal tendencies in natural lenguages into account to attain a satisfactory understanding of dialectal diversity.
