The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of discourse as mediation (Cros, 1990 and 1997) in La tribuna (1882), by Emilia Pardo Bazán, through the study of illocutionary speech acts (Armengaud, 1990; Lyotard, 1979) as narrative ingredients which de facto participate in the story and give access to the deep meanings of this novel. As a results, it can be said that exertive, commisive and verdictive acts are the illocutionary language acts which lead the narrative plot in La tribuna, and make evident the political context in Spain at that time. As a conclusion, it can be said that discourse in this novel constitutes the true origin for meaning, where discursive mediations give access to dialectical, symbolic and ideological meanings.
