This article begins with an analysis of the de-politization and asphyxiation of civic life in western contemporary societies, and suggests that in order to analyse it, references to the complexity of both the postmodern and neoliberal cultures are not enough to explain such phenomena. Instead, the analysis has to take into account the constitution of  modern citizenship and its functionality within capitalism. In this respect, the elucidation of the notions of civic society and of individual consensus allows us to understand that the abstraction in which  citizenship is delineated is found in the model of utilitarian and individualistic subjectivism, which is not at all similar to the re-creation of civic virtues, and that it becomes institutionalized within a format that sacrifices what is political in favor of processes that focus on a few strictly "para-political" powers.
