Resumen

MOSQUERA, Alexander. The Colombia-Venezuela Confrontation from a Discourse Perspective. Opcion [online]. 2006, vol.22, n.50, pp.55-77. ISSN 1012-1587.

Many news broadcasts reflected the tension of the recent Colombia-Venezuela crisis, which occurred due to the capture in 2004 of a FARC guerilla fighter in Caracas (Rodrigo Granda). This paper is a preliminary advance on a research project, the objectives of which are to: 1) describe the implicit discourse of those announcements; 2) identify the semantic and pragmatic aspects of that discursive confrontation; 3) delineate the ideological components of those communications. Some methodological and theoretical elements from Colle (2000), Bolívar (1998) and Molero de Cabeza (1985) were taken for the analysis. As preliminary conclusions, it can be said that in the Granda affair Colombia applied the old “purposes justify the means” policy, and it questioned Venezuela‘s performance in the fight against terrorism, perhaps due to its close relationship with the U.S. Government.

Palabras clave : Colombia-Venezuela confrontation; discourse analysis; Granda affair; terrorism.
