CID JURADO, Alfredo Tenoch. The Signs of Meringue: A Semiotic Analysis. Opcion [online]. 2006, vol.22, n.50, pp.101-127. ISSN 1012-1587.
The following article analyzes the phenomenon of Meringue from a semiotic perspective. Meringue is understood as the result of a process of cultural mixing that is produced in America in the music world. Meringue is also the result of distinct semiotic systems. Due to its characteristics, Meringue should be approached through inter-semiotic and cultural translation perspectives. In order to comprehend its syntactic, semantic and pragmatic dimensions, an analysis is necessary that would break-down the component parts: the language, the music and dance, as well as the rhythm, the steps, the gestures and the scenario. This summing of the aforementioned components allows a comprehension of the basis for meaning that places the dance within a complex semiotic system, capable of conserving and transmitting the collective memory of the people as well as generating new processes of communication, the ultimate purpose of which is identity.
Palabras clave : Meringue; semiotics; Afro-Antillean music; semiotics of music; ethno-musicology of dance.
