This work questions the modalities of research in communication that have prevailed in Latin America, and has as its objective, to touch upon the problems confronted, the objects of study, the focuses and methodologies utilized, the most frequently applied strategies, and the abilities developed. Also, it visualizes what should be the future perspectives to be studied in terms of where we are going, and what is desirable and possible in the field of regional communication research. Methodologically, we undertake theoretical research, a bibliographical and documentary study which allows us the basis for critical, retrospective and prospective analysis. The proposals offered serve as recommendations for Latin American academic and research institutions that work in the field of the social communication, and which undertakes processes for improvement and change.
