This paper describes the profile of competence of teachers at the University of Zulia in the research function, and its relationship with the intellectual production indices, based on the theoretical concepts of Hay Group (1996), Leboyer (1997) and Sanabria (2004). The population selected for study was researchers affiliated with the Pedagogical Documentation and Research Center (CEDIP). A bibliographical data sheet and a scale type questionnaire were evaluated by experts and received a high confidence level. A high level of generic and technical competence was found, as well as a correspondence between the levels required and those possessed. The relationship between competence and intellectual production was medium to low.
