Resumen

This paper seeks to establish a conceptual bridge between chaos theory and linguistics, a field that has been unwilling to accept this new paradigm. It explains that this situation is due principally to the influential work of F. de Saussure, impregnated with positivist linguistic doctrine. Nevertheless, based on concrete examples, the paper shows that an interdisciplinary perspective makes it possible to discern manifestations of chaos laws in language. Conclusions are that, notwithstanding differences, it is possible to visualize language as a chaotic system and thus interrelate these two apparently incompatible areas of knowledge.
