GALLUCCI, María José. On woman image in reggaeton discourse. Opcion [online]. 2008, vol.24, n.55, pp.84-100. ISSN 1012-1587.

Nowadays, the reggaeton is a very popular musical genre in Latin America. Considering exclusively the criticism about the sexual orientation and woman belittlement expressed in the reggaeton lyrics, this investigation, following the theoretical and methodological perspective of critical discourse analysis (Fairclough, 1989 and 2003; Fairclough and Wodak, 2000; Van Dijk, 1999, 2000 and 2003), aims to describe how man present women’s image in reggaeton lyrics. The corpus was a total of 10 of the most successful lyrics by two Puerto Rican exponents of this musical genre: Daddy Yankee (5) and Don Omar (5). Through this investigation, one can conclude that, even when in many cases the lyrics do have a heavy load of sexual content; it is also true that, in other lyrics, the singer (re)presents woman from his feelings, and in situations that are not unusual to our everyday life.
