Resumen

MBARGA, Jean-Claude. Discourse about space in the novel Piso bajo by Ramón Gómez de la Serna. Opcion [online]. 2008, vol.24, n.56, pp.92-105. ISSN 1012-1587.

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of space in Piso bajo, by Ramón Gómez de la Serna, not only as a structuring coordinate of the narration, but also as a genuine actor that participates fully in the story told and gives access to the novel’s deep meanings. The contributions of Soubeyroux (1993, 1985) regarding speech about space, as well as the analysis levels proposed by Mitterand (1980) related to the mimetic topography, functional toposemia and ideological symbolism were taken into account. Semiological analysis of the spaces of Piso bajo revealed -among other things- that in the novel, there is a construction of fictitious space starting with elements taken from a Spanish reality that produces in the reader an effect of the real (Barthes, 1978); furthermore, that space constitutes an essential textual category that leads to deep dialectic, symbolic and ideological meanings.
