PRADO, Rafael; LEAL JEREZ, Morelva  e  FERNANDEZ, Zaidy. Ceuta: space and identities in a water town. Opcion [online]. 2009, vol.25, n.58, pp.96-116. ISSN 1012-1587.

Based on the anthropological theory about the construction of social identities, specifically spatial codes, in differentiation and collective identification processes, a field study was made in the community of San José of Ceuta, located in the Baralt Municipality, State of Zulia, Venezuela. The ethnographic method was applied, using techniques of participant observation and interviews. Content analysis of the compiled material permitted concluding that the relationship of this community with Lake Maracaibo represents a symbolic referential code defining themselves and others. A relationship of centrality between Ceuta and the neighbouring towns was evidenced. The relation water-earth constitutes a core of meaning from which logic, discourses and actions have been constructed, contextualized in a scenario where there is a dispute for control of the land spaces that surround the water town.

Palavras-chave : identities; water towns; stilt houses; cultural spaces.
