Abstract     The scientific and technological activity of the Madrid Community (MC) in the 1997-98 period is examined on the basis of bibliometric indicators. The group’s scientific production is taken from the SCI international data base and the ICYT Spanish data base. Figures on its technological production come from the Spanish (CIBEPAT) and European (EPAT) patent data bases. Tables permit a thematic comparison of the results from the different sources. It is found that publications in the basic sciences (physics, chemistry, biomedicine) are mostly in international journals, while publications in applied fields (agriculture, engineering) tend to be in national journals. The MC is more active in the scientific than in the technological arena, and generates few European patents; this indicates a weakness of Spanish industry.
