This article explores the possible environmental and social impact of current policies and strategies on the peri-urban interface. Two types of interventions are distinguished: 1. Those with an explicitly spatial dimension and that affect the development of the interface, and 2. Those referring to sectorial policies, generally without spatial dimensions and with effects on the environment and on persons and firms that derive their subsistence from the interface. After citing several examples, the importance of integrating the awareness of the problems and opportunities of the peri-urban interface is presented in the policies directed to these areas. A greater comprehension of the effects of those policies is called for, in particular those connected with social justice, the generation of wealth and environmental sustainability.
