The essay discusses those ideologist and culturalist stances that subordinate Human Rights to supra and antipolitical realms. Consequently, it emphasizes the essentially political character that identifies Human Rights as a construct intended to regulate conflicting relationships in national as well as international fields. Contrary to the thesis that values social rights as set forth in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights over individual rights, paving the way to all types of transgressions of the latter, the paper argues that only through the defense of individual rights it is possible to protect social rights. Lastly, in view of the debate between universalists and particularists, it points out that, regarding human rights, universalism and particularism are not contradictory but complementary.
