The paper points toward the analysis of the diverging stance of Hugo Chávez’s administration regarding the priorities of the hemispheric agenda set up by Washington, and its potential effects on Venezuelas’ governance, narrowly understood as staying in power. The focus is on the deviation from the regional consensus about representantive democracy. Such a position is at variance with a forty years-defense of the model by previous Venezuelan administrations. Therefore, we offer a condensed account of the democratic approach in Venezuela and the region.
