Shaping a sustainable production model poses significant challenges to academic institutions. The new technological and economic paradigm demands socio-institutional efforts to address new forms of knowledge production. The evolution towards eco-efficient production is perceived as a learning process that goes beyond the assimilation and use of new technologies, bringing up shifts in the paradigm, from a technological and economic perspective to an environmental-productive one. Such a process takes very different forms in the global framework. This article highlights some trends in the production of scientific and technological knowledge in the environmental-industrial field, the nature of the demands of that knowledge in Venezuela, and how the Universidad Central de Venezuela deals with them.
