Resumen

MIRES, FERNANDO. Los diez peligros de la democracia en América Latina. CDC [online]. 2006, vol.23, n.61, pp.1-38. ISSN 1012-2508.

After the end of the Cold War, difficult but positive process of democratization took place in most Latin American countries. Nevertheless, the consolidation of democracy is not free from dangers. On the one hand, there are those of a relapse into past militarism and dictatorships. On the other hand, we witness the advance of extremely aggressive nationalist populisms, to a great extent due to the political disintegration in the region during the bi-polar time. Against such a reality, there is no choice but to contribute, in any possible way, to the democratic strengthening of the countries in question. The ten core threats to democracy presented in this essay do not constitute an exhaustive list. They are to be considered as a proposal for the discussion of the «democratic phenomenon» in its Latin American form.

Palabras clave : Latin America; Democracy; Politics.
