This paper aims to elucidate the structural factors and social alliances in the conflict between the Argentinean government and the organizations of the pampean farmers in the wake of the new export taxes on grains, a policy put into effect in March 2007 and canceled this year. On the one hand, the technological and productive changes (especially the convergence of transgenic soybeans and direct sowing), that exacerbate the economies of scale in the pampean agricultural sector. On the other hand, the predominance of big landowners and the increase of leasing amid small and medium landholders. The combination of both processes resulted in brand new alliances in a context of high grain prices in the international markets.
