Economic changes in Cuba in recent years have produced a significant socio-spatial reorganization. Starting from a territorial organization based on a centrallly planned economy, the island begins to experience the spatial fragmentation linked to the asymmetrical regional insertion to the world market, and the state´s difficulties to balance those disparities. These circumstances decant in the urban centres and particularly in Havana. This city has become a dual space, with a dynamic north fueled by tourism and investments and a stagnant south, penalized by the reception of negative externalities and a growing deficit in public spending. This is a major challenge for the Cuban planners in the future.
