This paper discusses used territory as important category of geography and social theory to understand nations. Illustrated with Brazilian circumstances, it considers the relationships between state and market, with emphasis in the politics of big companies and public authorities. Technique, science, information and finances form the spatial division of labour in the globalization, and together with consumption constituted explanatory variables. Nevertheless, that spatial division of labour devalues other forms of production and creates social debts as basic goods become scarce and subordinated to market laws. As a whole, the used territory would contribute to rethink citizenship and to strengthen links between places.
