This paper examines the new relationships established by the Venezuelan State with old and new business associations. It analyzes the period beginning with Hugo Chávez election to the Presidency in 1999 and ending with the re-election in 2007. Venezuela has witnessed a process of displacement of the old business associations by new ones born under the umbrella of the chavist project, giving rise to a sort of State corporativism. As a result, the Venezuelan State has lacked the domestic checks and balances needed for decision-making in economic matters, with this role being played by the association grouping the large international oil consortia.
