Resumen

LOPEZ MAYA, Margarita  y  LANDER, Luis E. El socialismo rentista de Venezuela ante la caída de los precios petroleros internacionales. CDC [online]. 2009, vol.26, n.71, pp.67-87. ISSN 1012-2508.

Venezuela is testing a social transformation towards what the government defines as a model of socialism. This essay maintains that we are seeing a rentist socialism with many of the former rentist capitalism´s vulnerabilities. The guidelines of the socialist model, as stated in government documents, are offer to the reader. Government-issued social and agricultural macroeconomic statistics figures are analyzed to evaluate performance against goals. The steps taken by the government in view of the significant loss of oil tax revenues -pivotal factor that boosted the Venezuelan economy through its modernization process and nowadays support the economic policies of the new model-, are examined. Such measures are found to be one-off and belated and lacking the purpose of surmounting the rentist Venezuelan economy

Palabras clave : Oil tax revenues; Rentist socialism; Economic policies.
