The emergence of the socialist path of the fifties and sixties in Arab countries of the Middle East and North Africa, as newly independent states, will not allow for democratic spaces. The introduction of a system with personalization of power, denial of human rights, suppression of fundamental freedoms, corruption and no separation of powers in most of them ended in bloodshed and single-party regimes with great emphasis on authoritarianism. This essay will develop the concepts of polítical liberalization and polítical democratization, reviewing the practices that blocks like the European Union and countries like the United States have undertaken to seek the democratization of the Arab world, as well as the relationship between democracy and Islam and the argument on their incompatibility
