GOMEZ CALCANO, Luis  e  ARENAS, Nelly. El populismo chavista: autoritarismo electoral para amigos y enemigos. CDC [online]. 2013, vol.30, n.82, pp.17-34. ISSN 1012-2508.

The principle of social and political unity governs the discourse and practices of Chavist populism. But the imposition of this principle has found resistance within the movement and in Venezuelan society. Thus, the regime has drifted into an electoral authoritarianism that reflects the contradictions between the desire for hegemony and the inevitable diversity inherent to pluralistic political systems. The electoral authoritarianism is exercised against opponents, perceived as «enemies», but also within «friendly»- i.e., loyal to the government-organizations. The combination of those practices is meant to reduce diversity, whithout achieving its goal: the tensions are still present in view of the electoral circumstances and the uncertainty about the president’s ability to perform his role.

Palavras-chave : Populism; Electoral authoritarianism; Chavism; Imperfect totalitarianism .
