Trough its evolution, at different historic periods (Ancient, Middle, Modern and Contemporary Ages), geography has being conceived as an art, an educative discipline, a science and a profession. On the other hand, its thematic contents of study have included at least four traditions, that shall be called regional, enviromental, spatial and humanistic, which have given path to several currents of geographical thought associated with each one of them. This paper analizes this conceptions and values its contributions to geographical science. Finaly we make some personal reflexions about the destiny of the discipline.
