GIL, Bárbara; SISO, Eunice y JARAMILLO, Yampierr. Area Implications Over Construction of the South Regional Highway La Victoria- San Sebastián de los Reyes axel, Aragua State, Venezuela. Terra [online]. 2015, vol.31, n.49, pp.121-138. ISSN 1012-7089.
The construction of new roads generates, without doubt positive impacts, thus integration with populated areas and contributes to strengthen the economical development. However, this activity also has some impacts on the environment, such as soil deterioration, lost vegetation, water quality deterioration, local fauna reduction; just to mention a few; and to society: the lowering of life quality, noise pollution, traffic increase among others. The ongoing investigation evaluates the environmental and social-economical impacts which will be generated by the construction of the south-regional highway La Victoria - San Sebastian de los Reyes axel; to accomplish this objective; the Leopold matrix and the environmental sensitivity methods were used, both of them allowed to identify the possible impact and predict risk, duration, intensity, extension and reversibility. The results indicate that the most significant impacts that could occur when developing this project are: deterioration of the Pao and Caramacate rivers hydrographic branches, which provide drinking water to the population of the San Sebastian de los Reyes municipal area; water quality alteration mainly to the Pao river which is originated by an inadequate rubbish disposition, furthermore, the increasing risk of forest fires along the highway. Meanwhile, the positive impacts found were: the direct road connection north- south between La Victoria - San Sebastian de los Reyes, the employment generation during the execution of the project and the increase of agricultural activity originated from having proper roads to transport supplies to the north of the Aragua state, this will also contribute to diversify the destination of the agricultural production of this area.
