Abstract

CRONICK, Karen; AGUILAR, Victor Hugo  and  CARTAYA, Nallely. Spatial distribution of violence in the Central University of Venezuela. Terra [online]. 2015, vol.31, n.50, pp.15-38. ISSN 1012-7089.

This article presents the partial results of a research project and intervention regarding the characterization of violence in the University City (CU) of the Central University of Venezuela. In this present report we elaborate descriptive statistics related to crimes in the CU. The project includes plans to develop a series of on-line, virtual maps that present statistics that are specific to different CU sectors, together with photos and other data destined to increase all users’ awareness of the phenomenon and to foment prevention activities. This present paper includes a theoretical section about violence, as both a local a global phenomenon, and local mapping and prevention. The partial results included here show the presence of petty thievery and a high percentage of physical violence. Female victims appear in a percentage that exceeds population expectations. Even though these results are not representative of campus violence, they have heuristic value.

Keywords : violence; crime; city; university; Caracas.
