ESPACIO ABIERTO [online]. 2025, vol.34, n.3, pp.163-184.  Epub 04-Sep-2025. ISSN 1315-0006.  https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15609282.

The migration of the rural population to urban areas, in search of better living conditions, is a phenomenon that forms part of much of Brazil's history and the departure of young people from the countryside is a situation that has been recorded. This article aimed to identify the main reasons for the rural exodus, especially of the youth population, presenting characteristics of this population and the attributes that encourage rural succession in the northern half of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil. As a methodology, a diagnosis was made on the topic, based on a bibliographical review of scientific articles published in the last decade, on sites such as Scielo, Scopus and Google Scholar. Among the characteristics of rural young people, it was found that some residents of rural properties do not carry out agricultural activities and use it as temporary housing; the majority of rural young people are male, revealing the predominance of female rural exodus; There is a tendency for young people graduating in agricultural sciences to remain or return to farming. The main causes of rural exodus and the weakening of rural succession addressed were: lack of attractions for staying in rural areas; derogatory thoughts about agricultural activity; lack of basic services and roads; deprivation of machinery and improvements; lack of support and trust from parents; low productivity and unviable size of areas. Finally, some good examples stand out aimed at helping young people stay in rural communities through material and technical support. Although support and encouragement are fundamental for rural succession, it is up to the young person to decide their future.

Palabras clave : Rural succession; masculinization of the field; rural exodus; quality of life; family farming; public policy.
