The article analyzes the resilience shown by Venezuelan society in the face of the major changes that took place in the first two decades of the 21st century. The first was when changes in international oil prices led the country to experience a period of opulence and waste, which was followed by a second decade of complex humanitarian emergency with poverty and severe food shortages that caused the largest emigration process in Latin American history. The article bases its argument on an analysis of secondary sources from national and international organizations, as well as primary data from population surveys conducted between 1996 and 2022. The sudden changes are related to the previous cycle of opulence and poverty in the period 1974-1982. The text shows the resilience of society in the face of political and economic crisis and highlights civil society initiatives and a change in the values and attitudes of the population and their impact on representations of good society and good governance.
