PETIT, Marybel; GONZALEZ, Marisela e MONTIEL, María. Profile of the working student at the Universidad del Zulia. Salud de los Trabajadores [online]. 2011, vol.19, n.1, pp.17-32. ISSN 1315-0138.
This project describes the profile of students enrolled at the Universidad del Zulia in 2008 who also worked, and centered on the following characteristics, each with its own methodology: demographics, socioeconomic status, health, pre-university education, personal values and academic self-efficacy. The study was descriptive; a multi-item questionnaire was administered to 2117 (24.3%) of an entering class of 9491 students. Of these, 313 who indicated they worked were selected. Results showed that most were informal (i.e., non-contract), unskilled, self-employed and mainly worked on weekends and off-days. Their socioeconomic status was lower than that of students who did not work. On average, they entered the university at an older age, and were mostly female. They were physically and mentally healthy, and during their free time tended to listen to the radio, watch television, read, and engage in recreational activities, but tended to learn on a more superficial level. They described themselves as confident in their ability to succeed academically, and their values were common to those of young adults who work and study in order to earn a university degree.
