Burnout syndrome is felt to derive from stress at work, and is mainly reported by professionals in health and education. We conducted a quantitative study of burnout syndrome level among 116 municipal schoolteachers in the city of Sobral-CE, using the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Results revealed that 46% of respondents presented a medium level of emotional exhaustion, 47% had a low level for depersonalization and 66% reported moderate professional fulfillment; collectively, this represented a population vulnerable to burnout. It is important to promote discussions on this topc among professionals in this area, to facilitate early detection and the development of preventive interventions for this syndrome.
