In February 2013 a cross-sectional study was conducted in the Jobo Liso cemetery of Ciudad Bolívar, Bolívar State, to determine the presence of Aedes aegypti and other culicids in containers used as vases. One hundred and twenty containers with water were examined in 77 graves. A total of seven vases (5.8%) and seven tombs were positive (9.1%). Regarding the type of container used as vases, the most common was plastic soda bottle cut in half. Five of them had immature stages (larvae and or pupae) of culicidi. Six of the seven positive containers had A. aegypti (container index: 5.0%). Of these six containers with Aedes, four were plastic, one glass and one granite vase. Two of the positive containers (plastic and granite) showed larvae of Culex sp. (28.6%). In the same container (granite vase) there were simultaneously A. aegypti and Culex sp. From the 145 collected specimens, 97 (66.9%) were larvae or pupae of A. aegypti and 48 (33.1%) were Culex sp. larvae. In conclusion, we found immature stages (larvae and pupae) of culicids A. aegypti and Culex sp. in vases from Jobo Liso cemetery in Ciudad Bolívar. The rate of infestation of containers by A. aegypti was low (5.0%).
