Abstract

An inventory of epiphytic macroalgae associated to A. germinans pneumatophores in El Morro lagoon, Margarita Island, was conducted between March 2011 and January 2012 in four stations. In each station, five pneumatophores were stripped in situ to detach the epiphytic macroalgae, which were preserved in 4% formalin. For identification, histological sections and morphological-anatomical observations were made. Thirty seven species were identified, 20 of which corresponding to Phylum Chlorophyta (54 %), 13 to Rhodophyta (35 %) and 4 to Heterokonthophyta (11 %). Filamentary and foliar macroalgae constituted the greatest number of species, which could be linked to their broad tolerance to salinity and tidal changes. Green algae presented the higher number of taxons, which could be attributed to the continuous waste-water discharge that drains into this lagoon. The identified species in this study are typical of tropical systems and El Morro lagoon is a suitable environment for the settling of marine macroalgae.
