BORREGO, Aralys; VILLALBA, William; CRESCINI, Roberta e PRIETO, Antulio. Growth of donax denticulatus linne, 1958 from la guardia inlet, Margarita Island, Venezuela. Saber [online]. 2013, vol.25, n.4, pp.463-467. ISSN 1315-0162.
The sandy-shores bivalve Donax denticulatus is found in some of the northeastern beaches of Venezuela, where it is consumed by local people who also sell it in the local market. Given the ecological and economic importance of this resource, the growth parameters were estimated from length frequency data in La Guardia inlet (Margarita Island, Venezuela) during July 2008-June 2009. Duplicated samples were obtained with a core of 15 cm in height and 8 cm diameter, at 2 m intervals within a distance of 10 m perpendicular to the coastline, and sieved with a mesh of 5 mm opening. The animals gathered were placed in bags and carried to the laboratory. There, the total length and total dry biomass were measured from each individual. The size distribution of Donax denticulatus ranged from 6 mm to 30 mm, and recruitment was continuous during the year. The estimated growth parameters from the von Bertalanffy equation were L∞=29.85 mm and K=1.70 with an expected longevity of 3 years. We recommend continuing with other research that provides further information for the better management of this fishery resource.
