FRANCO-SALAZAR, Víctor A; VELIZ, José A y VALERIO CARABALLO, Rosanna. Some physiological parameters of aloe vera (L.) burm. F. (sábila) in Guayacán, península of Araya, Sucre state, Venezuela. Saber [online]. 2014, vol.26, n.1, pp.18-24. ISSN 1315-0162.
Some physiologic parameters of Aloe vera were evaluated in two plots, plot A far from the sea and plot B near the sea, both situated close to Guayacán, Araya Península, Venezuela during dry and wet seasons. Leaf volume and relative water content (RWC), protein and proline contents in aqueous chlorenchymatic extracts and foliar aloin exudates were determined. Leaf volume was smaller in plot B in harvested leaves during the dry season; whereas RWC was only smaller in the dry season. Chlorenchyma protein and proline contents were smaller in drought harvested plants. Protein content was also smaller in plot B. The aloin maximum levels were found in A. vera leaves of plot A and in the dry season. The results suggest that A. vera could be cultivated in coastal zones but not so near the sea and with adequate water supply in order to obtain larger foliar volume and RWC. If instead, a larger production of aloin is desired, it is advisable to supply little water to the plants in the cultivated area.
